Why would you get a recycler over a regular rig? That’s a great question. A regular rig works just fine, in fact, more than fine. It’s good, really good. But How Does it Work?

How is it that a recycler works? Great question. 

So, you have your recycler, it’s filled with water. You heat the nail with your butane torch and you grab a tiny glob of that oh so yummy wax. You gently place it onto the heated nail, oh so carefully so as to not drop it, and you eagerly chug away.

Immediately after you’ve inhaled the smoke goes through the downstem and into the first of the chambers. In its short stay in the first chamber, the smoke will be filtered and pampered with some cool water. Ensuring any impurities are removed before making its way down to the second chamber.

After a cold plunge in the first chamber, the smoke will waft on over to the second chamber, where it will pass through the percolator. Here, the smoke will undergo further filtration, and its passing through the second chamber will result in more surface area for the smoke to make contact with the water. It’s like a day at the spa followed by an all you can eat buffet planned out just right so you get both lunch AND dinner.

Rig Rumors

The history of dab rigs is a tale as old as time, often leaving much up to conjecture. There’s stories and rumors often attributing their origin to Chinese railroad car workers while others will swear by paratroopers in Vietnam being the ones to invent rigs. We’re not here to tell you what to believe, but we can say this much: dabs are not a modern invention. History shows they have been around since before we took our first puff. 

B.R. (Before Rigs)

At one point or another, someone had the genius idea of inventing rigs. Now you may be thinking—‘why do I need a rig? Why can’t I just smoke wax out of my bong? I bet big-weed just invented rigs to get us to spend more money,’ No. For all you conspiracy theorists out there, you’re wrong. One can’t simply put wax in their favorite pipe and smoke. If you like wasting money you could. Honestly,  you may as well just take the 40$ dollars you spent and burn it because that's what you’re doing trying to smoke top-shelf wax out of a pipe. 

Early smoking pioneers realized the inefficiency and wastefulness of smoking wax out of traditional pipes and bongs. New ways had to be found. Innovation had to take over. It was inevitable. Early engineers tried the “hot-knife” method, involving heating a knife with a stovetop or torch, and gently placing a dab on top, allowing the user to inhale all the vapor. Pretty easy to guess why this method was quickly abandoned in favor for the “swing skillet” method, which adds a downstetm to the equation. Early days of dabbing were grim, dangerous even, but they laid the foundation for what was to come: rigs. 

Rig Revolution

Demand for a safer and a more efficient way of smoking wax was at an all-time high. People needed better ways to smoke as homemade dabbing  was just not cutting it. Then along came the founding fathers of dab rigs as we know them: HashMasterKut, simply known as HMK and JP Toro. While details are murky, it is said HMK and his sister invented the HMK Vapor Curve and Skillet, the earliest version of a rig. 

The design was simple, yet transformative. Smoking dabs was now not just less sketchy—but safer. With this design, a glass, or titanium skillet, was connected to a swing arm. One would heat the skillet with a butane torch, and then you’d swing the plate down to the front of the dab rig, placing it underneath the borosilicate vapor curve, and you’d simply inhale. It really sounds more complicated than it actually was. 

Domed at Home

HMK’s design was life changing for the smoking world—but it wasn’t perfect. It was bulky and awkward to handle at times. In hopes of streamlining the process, JP Toro designed the traditional rig, the dome and nail setup. 

This setup consisted of a nail, which was then covered by a dome while you got domed. That’s dome-squared. JP Toro’s setup consisted of a nail attached to a pipe, with a glass dome that would be placed on top of the nail, snugly covering the nail, to capture the wax vapor and ensure it reached its final destination: your lungs. You would simply heat the nail, cover it with your glass dome, place your desired amount of wax through the opening onto the hot nail, and pull, as the vapor made its way through your system—ensuring you were absolutely domed.
