The best way to do this is with a pipe cleaner. Run a pipe cleaner (or multiple, if the stem is wide) through the pipe’s stem and repeat with clean pipe cleaners until they come out clean.

Most of the wood pipes have a lid that is fastened down with a screw. Take this out, and clean thoroughly the underside of the lid and the top of the bowl until all debris or build-up is gone. Fasten the lid back on and you should notice a big difrerence!

It is definitely recommended to use a screen in these pipes. This will help the pipe to not get clogged up as quickly and stop ash from coming through while drawing on it.
