How much water should I actually use in a bubble base bong?
"I filled it halfway and it's splashing me." Yeah, don't do that. You want the water about an inch above the slits in your downstem. Since the base is a sphere, a tiny bit of water covers a lot of surface area.

Does glass thickness matter with a bubble base bong?
Yes. Look for 5mm or 7mm borosilicate. You might see some cheap soda-lime glass versions at local shops that feel light. Avoid those. They can't handle the thermal shock of a hot cleaning rinse and will crack at the joint welds.

Is it harder to clear the smoke from a bubble base bong?
"It feels like I'm pulling forever." That’s the extra volume talking. If you find it's too much for your lungs, look for a bubble base with a thinner neck. A 38mm neck clears much faster than a 50mm one.
